FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BRAVE
The greatest heights in life are attained by those
who have the daring to get these. Success is not a free gift that falls into
anyone's lap if he just wishes for it. He must work hard, and be courageous
enough to face and overcome danger in order to succeed.
A man, who wants to be successful in his life, must
decide at first his aim that is in which way he wants to be successful in his
life. Because, success comes not in a single way it comes in many ways.
Somebody wants to be a successful doctor, some wants to be famous singer or
some wants to be a businessman. But in every field of life one should give
great effort to achieve his goal.
So, once one is determined to become successful in
his life, nothing can resist him from his hard work and efforts he is giving
without ceasing. His strong determination helps him to make himself
self-confident and courageous to overcome any obstacle which may come in his
way.
Courage does not mean the absence of fear.
Courageous people do feel fear, but they are able to manage and overcome their
fear so that it does not stop them taking action. They often use the fear to
ensure that they are not overly confident and that they take the appropriate
actions. Thus fortune befriends the brave and courageous people.
God gives the life and man has to live it. Since
this world is full of challenges and fear, thus one who shows bravery in his
life fortune comes along their way. To cite a simple example, artists had to
face the stage fear at the time of their performance and if they will not show
their bravery at that time, their fate will not smile on them. Similarly a
singer must show his/her bravery to face the audience, a teacher must show
his/her courage to face the questions being put by their students, a politician
must be bold enough to face the people and a businessman must have the strength
to take risks. Thus fortune favours those who have courage and who can take
risks.
There are ample of examples of
great personalities on whom fortune smiled just because of their adventurous
spirit to fight with all odds. Abraham Lincoln is the greatest example of this.
The fiasco that he handled boldly had turned him into President of USA. He
failed in business in 1831, was defeated in the legislature in 1832, again
failed in business in 1833, suffered a nervous breakdown in 1836 and was
defeated as a speaker and an elector in 1836 and 1840 respectively. He was
defeated for a seat in the Congress in 1843 and 1848 and again defeated in the
Senate in 1855 and 1858. Finally in 1860 he was elected as President. Bowing to
his ability to overcome setbacks, fortune conferred on him the prestigious
title of ‘President’. Caliber to kick the setbacks and thrash the failure is
what one ought to inculcate, to fearlessly face problems thereby making one’s
own destiny.
In the words of Mahatma Gandhi,
“Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable
will.” Gandhiji showed courage the minute he decided he wanted to help India
reach Independence, even though he knew the British were likely to kill him for
it. But he didn’t care about it. It was his courage, extraordinary will and
strong determination that without using any weapons he made India free from the
clutches of British rulers.
Life is driven by destiny and we
are the creator of our own destiny. However powerful the fortune may be,
however adverse the time may be, it is only the person himself who can rule the
above it all. Arunima Sinha is a perfect example of this. She is a national
level volleyball player who lost a leg when she was thrown out of a moving train
for resisting a robbery attempt. She was hospitalized with serious leg and
pelvic injuries and in a bid to save her life; doctors had to amputate her left
leg below the knee. Instead of losing hope, she gathered herself and rose above
her disability to achieve the unthinkable. Lying there on the hospital bed she
decided to climb the Mount Everest. In May 2013, she created a history by
becoming the first female amputee and the first Indian amputee to climb the
Mount Everest. For this achievement she has won Padma Shri, the fourth highest
civilian award of India. She believes that luck favours those who have the
drive and the tenacity to win. She proved to the world that legs may help to
climb mountains, but what one really needs is a heart, a brave heart.
Similar is the case of Sudha
Chandran, famous Indian actress and Bharatanatyam dancer, who did not let an
accident come in the way of achieving her dream. In 1981 she met with an
accident in which she was wounded. The doctors missed a wound on her ankle and
plastered the leg. After two weeks, when she went for a checkup doctors realized
that the wound was now infected and gangrene had formed and there was no
alternative other than to amputate her leg. She subsequently overcame her
disability with the help of a prosthetic ‘Jaipor leg’. After a few years she
could walk properly and then she again started practicing dance. Today she is
one of the most highly acclaimed dancers of the Indian subcontinent. She was honoured with various awards. Very
soon she catapulted to fame and recognition by venturing into the world of
films and television. She gained this fame with her strong determination.
Fortune favours the prepared mind.
It is true in case of Kiran Bedi, India’s first female IPS officer, who had
performed many courageous acts to make her job a success. Once she dragged the
car of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for violating car parking rules. In
the 90’s she was transferred to the Tihar Jail, known as the most Notorious
jail in India, where she alone transferred the jail into a peace loving ashram
by introducing literacy and meditation programs. This act of courage fetched
her Magsaysay Award. She had also single handedly managed the Punjab separatist
movement and fought against the sword carrying Sikh militants. Her courage and
achievements have influenced and inspired a number of women that we can see
women in the police forces today.
It is rightly said that diligence
is the mother of good fortune. Achyuta Samanta, the founder of KIIT and KISS
University, made his own destiny only by his sheer determination, strong
will-power and selfless dedication. He was born in a family of acute poverty.
His determination to win over adversities made him to forge ahead. Against all
odds he not only passed M.Sc in first class, but also got a Lecturer’s job even
before the publication of his final result. He could have led a relatively
comfortable life in this job but he had different plans. He always dreamed of a
society where no one would ever cry out of desperation for not being able to
achieve anything in life because of poverty. This made him set up Kalinga
Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in 1992 which has grown substantially
to be one of the finest universities of the country. However for him this
success was merely a means to an end. He strongly believed that hunger,
malnutrition, ignorance of resource utilization and exploitation can be
successfully dealt with empowerment through education and provision for
sustainability. His conviction that illiteracy causes poverty and literacy
drives it away made him to establish Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences
(KISS) in 1993. Today it has grown into the largest free residential
institution for the tribal children in the world. Recently it was declared
deemed university which becomes the first tribal university in the world. His
life changed from penury to opulence because of his tremendous will power and
self confidence.
So it is clear from the above that
only the brave persons can win in the competition of success. They get the
favour of fortune. Every venture has a great attraction to them. They do not
care about any risks and failures that may come in their way. They only do
their duty and work with strong determination and full concentration. They do
not wait for the miracle to happen rather they make miracles by their own.
